My "test" is usually how many windows open the second I click play. If more than one tab pops up, I’m out of there immediately. It’s just not worth the risk anymore. I actually had a similar experience to your coworker a few years ago with an old tablet; it got so many redirects that it was basically unusable. Since then, I only visit sites that have a very straightforward player and no hidden overlays. I took a look at your link, and it definitely passes the "clean" test for me. It’s refreshing to see a site that focuses on the video rather than trying to trick you into clicking a fake download button.
